Nc’nean Single Malt – What is Organic Whisky?

Ncnean Distillery - Organic Whisky

Consumption trends in the drinks industry are changing. Demand for sustainable and organic products is growing worldwide, and many examples within the beer and wine industries can be easily found in shops and supermarkets. The whisky industry seems to be more aware of this than ever before, and some exciting players are now stepping into a trend that will likely become the new normal within the next 20 years.

So, what is organic whisky?

Organic whisky is produced without synthetic fertilisers, pesticides, or genetically modified organisms (GMOs). This means that the grain used to make the whisky is grown without harmful chemicals and is not genetically modified. But why should you care about organic whisky?

Firstly, it ensures that the whisky is made using natural and sustainable methods, which are better for the environment. For example:

  • Organic farming practices promote biodiversity
  • Reduce pollution
  • And help to conserve water and soil resources.

Secondly, the absence of synthetic chemicals in the production process means no residual pesticides or other harmful substances that can make their way to the finished product. In addition, organic whisky might preserve the natural flavour compounds of the soil where the grain was grown more efficiently, as artificial chemicals do not mask its natural flavours.

One example of organic whisky is Nc’nean, a Highlands single malt whisky distillery founded in 2013 by Annabel Thomas, who is passionate about sustainable and organic farming practices. Nc’nean’s unique whisky production process uses:

  • Organic barley grown on-site.
  • Renewable energy sources from a biomass boiler to power its operations.
  • Wood chips heat the stills and buildings, reducing fossil fuel needs.
  • 100% recycled glass in the production of each Nc’nean bottle.

Nc’nean produces a range of organic single malt whiskies aged in various casks, including ex-bourbon and ex-red wine barrels. The whiskies are unpeated, meaning they have a lighter, more floral flavour profile than smoky whiskies. Their whiskies have captivated the taste buds of whisky enthusiasts and critics, earning prestigious accolades at the highly acclaimed 2020 International Whisky Competition, the 2020 Tales of the Cocktail Spirited Awards and last but not least, a B-corp certification awarded by the not-for-profit organisation B Lab who believe all businesses should be used as a force for good.

This certification allows companies to demonstrate their commitment to social and environmental responsibility, providing a framework for measuring and improving their impact on the world.
